Chapter Four

Kimberly and Paige were waiting for her when she got home. One look at her face was enough to send Paige scurrying to the freezer for ice cream while Kimberly wrapped her in a fierce hug and pulled her over to the couch. Neither of them said “I told you so,” although to Alyssa the words seemed to hang heavily in the air.

They piled onto the couch with her, silently comforting as she pretended to watch television and downed half the carton of rocky road while her mind raced. What was she going to do? Kyle obviously still thought of her as a child, and she was beginning to doubt that she’d ever be able to make him believe otherwise. That thought was like a spear of ice plunging into her belly. If she couldn’t convince him then it was over. She’d never feel his arms around her again, never tingle and float with the wonder of his kisses. He’d never love her.

Love. Why had she had to fall in love with the man? Why couldn’t she have just been happy with a couple of kisses? Really, really spectacular kisses.

It was Lisa who jolted her out of it. She came in late from a math study session, and when she saw them all lumped together on the couch she planted her tiny fists on her hips and frowned.

“What has that idiot done?”

Kimberly threw her an indignant look. “She didn’t do anything.”

With an exasperated sigh Lisa dropped her backpack and went to the couch where she wedged herself in between Paige and Alyssa. “Not her. Mr. Dreamboat. What did he do, ‘lyssa?”

“He…” Her voice caught and she had to swallow hard to continue. “He thinks I’m still a child, and won’t see me as anything else.”

Slowly she recounted the whole story, told them about the growing chemistry between her and Kyle, and the way their day together had played out. When she had finished Lisa reached up to place a slender arm around her shoulders.

“It’s not as bad as you think.”

Alyssa snorted. “How is him pushing me away and calling me ‘a kid’ not as bad as I think?”

“Well, for starters the man is absolutely crazy about you. He’s fighting it as hard as he can because he thinks he’s all wrong for you, but it’s pretty obvious from where I sit that he’s losing.”

“What makes you think he’s crazy about me? He sure made it sound like I was pretty easy to dispense with. He’s just a player, Lisa, and I knew that. He was just doing what they do—kissed the girl, but she’s too young for anything else so it’s on to the next one. I’m such an idiot.”

Lisa laughed. “Oh, come on. You know better than that. I’ve seen the way he looks at you. He’s fallen hard; he just doesn’t have any clue what to do about it, so he’s pushing you away.”

“Do you really think so?”

“I told you, I’ve seen how he looks at you. He wants you so badly it scares him.
